3 reasons why Manchester United need to sign £40m midfielder

Manchester United are in need of strengthening the middle of their squad, not even the most ardent Red Devils fans can argue with that.  Yes, they have dominated the Premier League this season and snatched the title back from noisy neighours Manchester City, but that was largely down to the vast number of goals that Robin van Persie provided.

Paul Scholes is without doubt one of the greatest midfileders of his generation, but his age inevitably catching up on him and the fact he is likely to retire in the near future is the first reason they need to stock up on a technical genius in the middle of field.

The second reason is the lack of strength in depth that Sir Alex currently has. Tom Cleverley looks a promising youngster, but whether or not he will blossom into the player is capable is yet to be seen. Brazilian flop Anderson is likely to be shipped out this summer due to his dismal showings and lack of progress, although I am not sure how many United fans will be bothered about that.

The third and final reason, and probably most important, is that their sensational front line needs to be supplied with opportunities. Michael Carrick has been drawing the plaudits with his efforts from the deep lying playmaker role this season but he is unlikely to have the help needed next season.

So, who do you suggest I hear you ask. None other than Cesc Fabregas. Barcelona are supposedly looking to get rid of the former Arsenal midfielder after a few questionable performances but he has proved that he can pull the strings with minimal fuss this season in La Liga.

In his 28 league games for Blaugrana this season he has scored 10 goals, created 44 chances and has an average pass success of 88%. with almost 60% of his individual duels being successful as well, he could be the perfect man to help retain the league title at Old Trafford.
