Liverpool target Premier League goalkeeper as Reina replacement

With Pepe Reina seeming to be constantly linked with a move away from Liverpool, they have marked the replacement for him in Sunderland number 1, Simon Mignolet.

It seems to have been in the rumour mill for months that Pepe Reina would go to Barcelona as it seemed nailed on that Victor Valdes would leave the Camp Nou when he entered the final year of his contract. But in a recent turn of events, Valdes has taken a massive U-turn and declared his want to stay in Spain.

So this may have possibly ended the possibility of a move to Barcelona but maybe not stopping a move to somewhere else, so just in case he does leave, Mignolet has been deemed the ideal replacement for Spain’s number 3, and it may just be me, but isn’t Mignolet better than Reina on current form anyway? Also, I’m presuming you could get Mignolet for less than you could sell Reina for and massively less wages, especially when Reina is rumoured to be on a bumper package of over 100,000 a week.

With Sunderland declaring Mignolet as their player of the season and other individual awards within the club, in contrast to Reina who has recently slipped off the boil in my opinion? I think that Liverpool should cut the losses with Reina, he’s now 30 and not likely to get any better in coming years, and on the other hand, Mignolet has really had a breakthrough season and probably the second best keeper in the league last season behind Julio Cesar, who was seriously fire fighting since day 1 of joining QPR. The Belgian will have a point to prove and confirm his starting spot in the Belgian squad for the next year, it has become a rather complicated situation for Brendan Rodgers due to Valdes’ decision to stay and will need to be resolved.
