Manchester United target Ron Vlaar has reportedly asked Aston Villa to double his wages to keep him from moving to Old Trafford. The news has been published by English Tabloid DAILY STAR. The Dutch World Cup star is not among the high earners at Villa Park and his long-term future remains in doubt. United are reportedly after him and Vlaar is out of contract in the summer.
Aston Villa wouldn’t want to lose their prized asset on a free transfer so they have to commit to Vlaar’s requirements. The centre back knows he is now holding all the aces as he would be able to leave on a free in June. The Midlands club are willing to increse his wages but the report claims that the potential £50,000-a-week package offer is unlikely to be enough to persuade their captain to stay.
If at all Vlaar decided not to accept the wage packet offer, United could sign him by January as Aston Villa would at least get some cash rather than when he becomes a free agent.
Vlaar was one of the key figures for Netherlands in the World Cup under Louis Van Gaal. He has also been thought about as a possible player who can easily fit into the back four at Old Trafford. United have looked vulnerable at the back after Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic all left the club in the summer to pursue their career elsewhere. Niggling injuries to Johnny Evans, Phil Jones and card issues to Taylor Blackett haven’t helped with the poor form of Chris Smalling.
We had earlier reported that Van Gaal preparing a £4m bid to test Villa’s resolve to retain Vlaar’s services. So will the World Cup star be finally United’s in the upcoming winter transfer window?
