Liverpool and Chelsea are rumoured to be involved in yet another transfer deal as the Reds line up a potential move for Fernando Torres with AC Milan preparing to cancel his loan deal after his disappointing form since joining them in the summer.
Torres was loaned out to Milan on a two-year deal as Jose Mourinho no longer had a place for him in the squad after signing Diego Costa, Loic Remy and Didier Drogba in the summer. Mourinho’s side struggled up front last season and had relied heavily on Eden Hazard who was their highest goalscorer. The frontline of Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba failed to fire, which ultimately cost them the title last time.
Since his big money move from Liverpool in 2011, Torres has failed to recapture his form of old that once made him a lethal striker. Torres has scored 46 goals in 182 appearances since leaving Liverpool; a paltry number considering that he was the fastest to score 50 goals in Liverpool’s history and holds the record for most number of goals scored by a foreign player in his debut season.
Not a good option for Brendan Rodgers
Liverpool have struggled with Daniel Sturridge and the departed Luis Suarez this season, two players who did the bulk of the scoring last season. It was always going to be a hard task to replace Suarez, but what has hurt Liverpool is that they went ahead and signed Mario Balotelli; a player who isn’t someone who suits Rodgers’ style.
While the need to strengthen is imperative come January, it’s unlikely that Liverpool will go after Torres considering his goal scoring record in the last few years. The 30-year old has been woefully short of confidence and there are major doubts if he will get even close to where he was at his peak years.
Liverpool signed Divock Origi in the summer and loaned him out to Lille. The Belgian is probably their best option if they can manage to recall him in January.
