Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he believes winger Raheem Sterling will stay at the club despite recent rumours linking him with an exit.

With Luis Suarez’s exit in the summer, lot of expectation was on the young shoulders on Sterling. Despite the lack of goals, Sterling has put in good performances. When asked on the possibility of Sterling leaving the club, Rodgers said,  “Hopefully that won’t be the case. We are a club that are trying to build something. We were on a path for a couple of years and of course we’ve had to come off that path since the summer. We’ve lost some players and are having to regroup again.

“Raheem is a real catalyst and talisman for this team. He’s been a great example of the progress that a lot of the players have made here, going from a youth team player into one of the top young players in European football. The club will work very hard [on the new contract]. Raheem’s happy here and loves being a Liverpool player. I’m sure between them and his representatives we can get a deal done that sees him continue to develop what is an exciting career.”

The 20-year old is contracted with the club until 2017 which means his future is still in doubt at the club as likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich could make a bid. Sterling doesn’t have an extravagant release clause, which is a cause for concern among the Liverpudlians as they could lose their star youngster for a relatively low fee. The England international has made 23 appearances in all competitions so far and has scored three goals in the process.

Liverpool’s next opponents are Bournemouth in the League cup tonight. Rodgers could give Sterling a rest as he has played in a lot of games this season.
