It is almost Christmas, which has given us 17 matches to rate the best players of the season, so far. This is also the time when managers check their respective squads to ensure that there are no passengers, but every member of the squad is contributing to the team’s cause. Goalkeeper And Defence

David De Gea

David De Gea

David de Gea – To say that he has been excellent is an understatement. He has been the epitome of consistency, saving almost everything that comes his way behind a rotating, unsteady defence, comprising of players who have been marred by injuries. He saved so many points for Manchester United this season.

Branislov Ivanovic – Primarily used at right-back this season, his ability to play at centre-back makes him dangerous defensively. Game after game, he attacks and defends in equal measure, often offering a burst of speed on the right to move the ball forward, but moving back in time to make interceptions.

John Terry – True, Ivanovic and he are teammates, but Terry is often the last line of defence that most teams struggle to clear. He makes interceptions on the line, his vision and tackling skills leave nothing to be desired. He is truly a captain, a leader and a legend for Chelsea.

Jose Fonte – Through this transfer window, he lost his defensive partners – Dejan Lovren, Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers – who were his fellow stars of last year’s successful campaign. However, he has adapted this year to new and old teammates, guiding Southampton to eight clean sheets this season.
