United close in on Arsenal target

Manchester United look set to kick off their summer transfer spree with unknown Lens defender Raphaël Varane.

Arsenal had also been linked with the 18-year old, but it appears Fergie has won the race to sign the teen starlet.

The Guardian reports that Lens wanted up to £10million for Varane, but United are set to offer a payment of instalments with an appearance fee bonus attached. Fergie will want to act quickly, as clubs in Spain and Italy and circling the French U21 star.

Varane’s advisors originally wanted the youngster to go back to France on loan, but United are keen for Varane to get use to the English game and is set to challenge for a centre half position next season.
