If you’re a Portsmouth fan, you know the threat Tottenham pose to your team.
Pompey supporters will remember the days when the Blue Army were starting a new season following an F.A Cup victory at Wembley, and Spurs were languishing at the bottom of the Premiership under Spanish manager Juande Ramos.
Pompey boss at the time was a certain Harry Redknapp, and when Ramos said ‘adios’ to White Hart Lane, they took the former West Ham chief away from the South Coast.
Redknapp knew how close the Blues were to financial meltdown, and in the long run, he benefitted from their peril.
Because in January, he reclaimed Jermain Defoe, and in the months that followed, he also attracted Niko Kranjcar, Peter Crouch and Younes Kaboul to London.
Cue inevitable relegation for Pompey, and near liquidation.
Whilst Spurs got to enjoy Champions League football and are now in a brilliant position to start pushing for the Premiership title for years to come.
So Fulham, I warn you now, if you don’t stay strong you too could be next!
Well, that’s a bit premature, as the Cottagers are in much better financial position, but when one player goes to Spurs, they could all go.
And today, Moussa Dembele has been heavily linked with a move to the Lilywhites, with a fee of £10 million quoted by the tabloids.
To make matters worse, rumours are the Belgian actually said the switch would be a step up.
The 24 year-old has impressed since coming to Craven Cottage and Martin Jol would not like to see the forward go.
However, money talks, and if Spurs can provide the cash, he could be on his way.
Hopefully they haven’t got enough money for anyone else; otherwise Steve Sidwell could soon follow.
And then once Sidwell goes, they’ll fall like dominoes.
Well, maybe not.
