Arsenal appear to have emerged as contenders for the signing of Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen, despite rivals Tottenham Hotspur appearing as favourites to bring the defender to England.
The 24-year-old had previously declared his admiration for Harry Redknapp’s side, who is a known admirer of the Ajax star.
However, Vertonghen is a fan of the Gunners and was recently in attendance of the North Londoners 3-0 win over AC Milan at the request of Thomas Vermaelen.
The versatile defenders’ contract expires in a little over 12 months time and it is believed the Dutch giants are ready to cash-in on the former youth team academy product.
“My agent knows what clubs I’m willing to go to. Arsenal are obviously one of them. Ajax are busy trying to find solutions to replace me,” he is quoted as saying in the Daily Express.
Ajax have since emerged as late Eredivisie title contenders and despite admitting he is keen to move to England, he insists he is focused on the club’s quest for domestic glory.
“Who wouldn’t want to play football at a top club in England?” the defender told NU Sport.
“If a nice club (is interested) I will hear about it from my agent.
“But first I want to concentrate fully on the title race.”
