There has been much discussion as to whether teams at the foot of the rankings such as San Marino should play a pre-qualifying round following their thrashing by England in Friday’s qualifying match.
They were abject, shocking and terrible all in equal measure. With a population of just over 300,000 and a team who don’t consider football as their full-time job they are always going to struggle to win any game, never mind one against England at Wembley.
The most truly horrifying result came against Germany in 2006, though, where ze Germans set a new record in putting 13 goals past the San Marinoians (is that the plural?). Relive it here.
