If anyone can think of a player that was more deserving of the player of the month award that Juan Mata, then please send suggestions my way. The diminutive Chelsea schemer has been in scintillating form for the West London side over the past month, who already has seven goals and eight assists this season.
It was his performances behind striker Fernando Torres and alongside Oscar and Eden Hazard that convinced those in power to award Mata the accolade, having netted three times throughout October, including a stunning free-kick during the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United nine days ago.
It is no surprise to have seen the Spaniard come on leaps and bounds once again this season, having arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer amidst reported interest from Manchester City. Mata has, at times, been cruelly overlooked in the Chelsea attacking trident behind Torres and, with the talent of Hazard and Oscar supporting him; fans are now starting to see the best of the former Real Oviedo startlet.
He’s one player that even rival fans struggle to take a disdain to, such are his performances; elegantly drifting across the attacking third and fully utilising the space between the opposition midfield and defence.
Comparisons by Chelsea fans with former hero Gianfranco Zola are apt, considering their playing styles and similar physiques. Supporters are now hopeful this is the long line of individual accolades Mata picks up, considering the better he performs, the more the Blues will benefit from his impressive displays.
