Is Zarate the striker Liverpool need in January? (Video)

Liverpool have been linked with a fair share of striking talent since the transfer window closed back in August. The decision to allow Dirk Kuyt and Andy Carroll, the latter on loan, depart Anfield, to Fenerbache and West Ham United respectively, has been scrutinised by certain quarters of the fanbase and the media.

Having brought in only Fabio Borini and his subsequent injury, coupled with missing out Clint Dempsey, the Reds have just Luis Suarez as the only recognised striker on the books. Should the Uruguayan pick up an injury or suspension, it’ll leave manager Brendan Rodgers light in the striking department.

Despite being linked with Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Burak Yilmaz and Jeffren in recent weeks, no movements are yet to materialise for Liverpool. However, it appears another striker has emerged on Rodgers’ radar – that of Lazio front-man Mauro Zarate.

The Argentinean is no stranger to England, having spent time on loan with Birmingham City before moving to current club Lazio in 2008. Nevertheless, the 25-year-old has found playing time with the Serie A outfit hard to come by and last season spent the season with Inter Milan.

What Rodgers will need is a striker that knows where the net is, something Zarate doesn’t necessarily excel in having scored 63 goals in 244 appearances since making his senior debut for Valez Sarsfield back in 2004.

Nevertheless, with Rodgers in desperate need of a new striker and Lazio likely to allow him to leave on the cheap, he could well find himself on the books at Anfield sooner rather than later, especially if the Reds board sanction a move for Zarate.
