As we approach a decade since David Beckham left the Premier League, it is important to remember what made him one of the most famous footballers in the world.

Beckham recently announced that he will be leaving Los Angeles Galaxy after the MLS Cup final on Saturday.  Rumours have since circulated about negotiations with AS Monaco, as the 37-year-old seeks one last challenge in his career.

The former Manchester United midfielder departed Old Trafford in 2003, moving to Real Madrid in a £25 million deal.  Beckham spent four years in Spain, but it wasn’t until his final game for Los Blancos that he clinched his first and only league title at the club.

A move to LA Galaxy in 2007 saw Beckham become the most high profile signing in Major League Soccer history, leaving European football behind in order to continue his career in America.  Since that day, it could be argued that the British perception of the former United star became that of a celebrity rather than a footballer.  With UK coverage of the MLS being far more limited than that of La Liga, often his name would be only be heard regarding issues off the field.

More likely to see him in an advertisement than on a football pitch, it is easy to forget just how good a player David Beckham was.  Winning six Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford, his performances for United made him what he is today.

David Beckham may make a good celebrity, but he made an even better footballer.
