Henry back at Arsenal? It won’t end well

With reports suggesting that Arsenal have reacquired Thierry Henry on a short-term loan from January 1st, it’s understandable that Gunners fans would be excited about the return of the Frenchman to the Emirates Stadium.

The 35-year-old is the club’s all time leading goalscorer following his initial eight year stint in North London, coupled with his short-term spell with the Gunners back in January. However, while his limited time with Arsenal earlier this year may’ve seen the supporters rewarded with two goals from his seven appearances, it is unlikely that the same dividends will be out paid third time around.

Henry will forever be a fan favourite with the Gunners, that’s a given. His time spent with the club during 1999 and 2007 will forever be remembered by supporters, regardless of his eventual exit to Barcelona over five years ago.

Many will exclaim that the mercurial Frenchman secured a ‘fairytale return’ to Arsenal last time he was in North London after netting against Leeds United in the FA Cup. Yet, lightning is unlikely to strike twice, unfortunately for the Gunners.

This Arsenal team is further devoid of the quality that made them such a threat during his initial time with the club and it can be argued it is a similar story from his two month spell from almost 12 months ago.

The lack of creativity pushing forward, regardless of the signing of Santi Cazorla, is evident this season, having drawn six of their Premiership games and failed to score in five of the 15 they’ve played. While his return will ultimately boost confidence with fans, it is unlikely his impact will be similar to that of 12 months ago.
