When I saw the news that Chelsea were about to appoint Rafael Benitez as Roberto di Matteo’s replacement I thought it was an elaborate joke, probably like most Chelsea fans.
Indeed, he won a Champions League and FA Cup during his tenure at Liverpool but those achievements paper over the cracks of what was, on the whole, a disappointing time at Anfield.
During the 2008/2009 season, with Liverpool in a good position to possibly win the league that year, Benitez’s ill-advised rant about Sir Alex Ferguson was a poor attempt to play mind games with a master of the art.
Liverpool capitulated in the closing stages of the season and Ferguson had the last laugh as United won the title.
