Wenger Rekindling Rivalries?

Gone are the days of Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson being worst enemies, nowadays the Premier League’s veterans are more used to sharing a friendly handshake and a bottle of wine than any hostile glares or angry exchanges.

Arsenal and Manchester United dominated the top flight of English football during the late 1990s and early 200s before rich Russian Roman Abramovich’s made Chelsea a top force in English and European football.

Prior to the arrival of Jose Mourinho on these shores it had been Wenger and Ferguson slugging it out and on the pitch, sometimes in the tunnel, Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira followed suit but Arsenal have now slipped away from the title challenge and Wenger and Ferguson have kissed and made up.

The pair’s relationship has improved as years have passed but Wenger might not have pleased the Manchester United boss with his opinion on Fergie’s latest outburst at officials during Boxing Day’s 4-3 victory over Newcastle United, We sometimes go overboard on the touchline and when you do that, you have to be punished.

“Whether it’s me or Fergie or anyone else in the world, the rules are the rules. It is not rules for one person and rules for another. It’s the same for everybody.

“We love the Premier League. It is watched all over the world so we want it to be respected by fans for its behaviours.

“Should you behave like that – no. I did not always behave as I should and you can call that a bad example, yes. So when you go overboard, you have to be punished.

“The message it sends out when you look at the pictures is just not to behave like that.”
