When it was confirmed that Robin van Persie had swapped Arsenal for Manchester United over the summer, I have to admit I had my doubts over how successful the Dutchman would be at Old Trafford. Granted, the striker netted 37 times in all competitions for the Gunners last season, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that any achievement couldn’t be replicated.
Yet, with the season now over the halfway point, the 29-year-old currently has 19 goals and eight assists to his name and continues to impress as United look to land their 13th Premier League title away from the hands of rivals Manchester City.
There was an underlying factor that I couldn’t shake that I believed Van Persie simply couldn’t smash in the goals much like he did for Arsenal again this season. While he had the likes of Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and Wayne Rooney providing from the midfield behind him, it just appeared an impossible feat to reproduce.
Nevertheless, he continues to astound, regardless of the goals scored for Arsenal last season. If he keeps up his current form, the possibility of netting 40 is certainly within his grasps, especially with the games coming thick and fast following the return of the FA Cup and the latter stages of the Champions League.
However, perhaps more importantly to the player himself, it will surely improve his chances to last his first Premier League title in his career, with United currently seven points clear at the summit of the table and showing no signs of slowing.
