Walters goals will do the striker a world of good (Video)

It’s been a particularly surreal few days for Stoke City front-man Jon Walters. The Republic of Ireland international endured a performance over the weekend that can only be described as cataclysmic.

After somehow volleying the ball into his own face in the first-half, the Potters striker followed this up with a spectacular own goal, firing a diving header past Asmir Begovic with a finish that even Les Ferdinand would’ve been proud of.

But Walters wasn’t done there, no sir. With Chelsea pushing for a second in their 4-0 win, the Stoke star again headed into his own net, this time from a Blues corner, which he foolishly turned his back on before seeing the ball bounce off his shaven head and into the back of the net.

While Frank Lampard and Eden Hazard secured the three points for Rafa Benitez’s side, Walters had a chance to make emends late on, albeit fairly insignificantly. Having seen his side win a penalty, the striker stepped up and, as expected with any player low on confidence, put his laces straight through the ball, smashing against the crossbar and seeing his effort join Charlie Adams’ and Sergio Ramos’ in the lower echelons of the earth’s stratosphere.

There are teams that, on the back of a heavy defeat, will be hoping another game needs to be played days later and that was the case for Stoke, with the club involved in an FA Cup third round replay against Championship outfit Crystal Palace.

With the tie taken the extra time, Walters netted twice in order to help secure a 4-1 win over the Eagles at the Britannia Stadium, with Stoke boss Tony Pulis rightfully praising the striker and his ‘British Bulldog Spirit’ following the final whistle.

While some strikers would’ve hidden away from the encounter, instead he stepped up to the plate and showed a great desire to put the demons from the Chelsea game to rest and it’s only right that Walters is receiving the plaudits for his brace in the 120 minutes of action.
