While Manchester United continue their domestic dominance in unspectacular, yet solidified, fashion, the transfer rumour mill continues to churn out story after story. Regardless of the need to bring in a defensive, burly midfielder; Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have instead been linked with a move for another striker.
Rumours today suggest that Sampdoria striker Mauro Icardi is attracting interest from United as they look to cement their place as one of the best in Europe. Regardless of possessing Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez, the young Argentine is a supposed target for the Premier League pace setters.
The 19-year-old has been in superb form for the Serie A side this season, netting eight league goals in 18 appearances, including an impressive brace in the 2-1 win over Juventus and four in the 6-0 rout over Pescara.
However, it appears as though Inter Milan have secured the signing of Icardi – another Argentine to lead the frontline – which would be a huge blow to United. His potential to succeed is a factor as to why a number of Europe’s biggest teams were chasing his signature.
Icardi continuously impresses all those that watch, be it for Sampdoria or with the Argentina U20 side. With the Nerazzuri expected to confirm his signature in the foreseeable future, it’s one player that United could rue missing out on. He has the capability to become the natural replacement for the ageing Van Persie and will turn out to player that will only improve with age.
