I have to admit that I was surprised when David Beckham announced that he had picked PSG as his next destination.
Initially, I thought it was because of the money, but he is of course donating his wages to charity and I suppose the move made sense with Paris being the fashion capital which works for his missus.
Anyway, the French media are getting themselves all worked up about Beckham which speaks to how much of a global icon the man is. He is so much more than a footballer now and the Beckham brand is known worldwide.
And to think it all started with that goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon many moons ago. The haircut was terrible but the goal sublime and from that point the only way was up for the man from Leytonstone.
The moment that sticks out most for me, however, and possibly the moment that he became a hero for England, was his last minute free kick against Greece which helped England advance to the 2002 World Cup finals. It would have been a disaster had England not qualified but David curled in that beautiful free kick to make sure that it did not happen.
It never gets old, so take another look at a Beckham classic: take a bow, Le Spice Boy.
