Could Cristiano Ronaldo make a dramatic move back to his old stomping ground from Real Madrid?
Ronaldo made his long awaited return to Old Trafford this week in Madrid’s 2-1 Champions League win and received the warm reception befitting of a player adored during his time with United, cruelly scoring the goal that proved decisive in Sir Alex Ferguson’s team’s European elimination.
Ever since leaving Old Trafford in 2009, Ronaldo has repeatedly done very little to pour cold water on rumours linking him with a return one day, always expressing his admiration for the club and in particular his ‘second father’ Sir Alex Ferguson. With reports of increasing unrest from all corner of the Bernabeu, Ronaldo would be forgiven for plotting his escape route from Spain, particularly if this season were to culminate in winning the Champions League at Wembley.
Amid reports that Ferguson may be looking to cash in on Wayne Rooney this summer, Ronaldo’s name is repeatedly mentioned as a potential signing to form a tantalising partnership with this season’s marquee signing Robin van Persie. Although he was certinaly world class by the time he left Old Trafford, there can be no doubt that the Portuguese captain would return a better rounded player than when he left.
The only sticking point would be the money, can United afford the fee needed to prise him away from Madrid, even with money generated from any sale of Rooney? Even if they could, can the afford the player astronomical wages, and if so, would this have a negative effect on the rest of the dressing room? One thing however is not in doubt, all football fans would love to see Ronaldo back in the Premier League.
