The goal poacher – The man who was the goal hanger at school, the one who wants to bask in the glory and do none of the running, the player whose short sprints and clever movement inside the box sees them create space and put the ball in the net.
There are plenty of important types of players in football, obviously, but every club on the planet needs a goal poacher, in my opinion. They are the ones who can be the difference between a win and a loss. If you have a striker who will run for hours, but their finishing is poor, then you will see a lot of chances go begging. If you have a creative striker to feed the balls into the space, but no one to be there to finish them off, then you will lose a lot of points. Stick someone like the man in this clip at the head of your attack, and you’re laughing.
Raul was one of the greatest poachers on the planet when he was at his peak for Real Madrid. Few could match his positioning, and even fewer his composure and potent finishing. The Spaniard finished his Madrid career with 323 goals in 741 games. He also has 40 goals in 98 games for Schalke, 10 goals in 25 games for Al Sadd, and 44 goals in 102 games for Spain.
Not a bad scoring record, eh?
