Chelsea’s latest midfield maestro is found (video)

One argument has surely been put to bed this week, and that is the debate as to David Luiz’s best position. While initially bought as a centre-back, his touches further up the field (and mistakes closer to his own goal) have perhaps earnt him a new permanent position.

The 26-year-old was signed in January 2011 by Chelsea from Benfica, and has since won both the Champions League and FA Cup. His goal on Thursday night against Basel helped ensure that the Stamford Bridge outfit will compete in this year’s Europa League final in Amsterdam, and what a goal it was.

Last season Luiz was struggling to shake off his £20m price tag, and was in danger of becoming a bit of a defensive joke. He was always dangerous further up the field, but he has Roberto Di Matteo and Rafa Benitez to thank for setting him free in the more advanced midfield role.

It remains to be seen whether he will ever be sent back to the apparently unsuitable back four position, but his displays are prompting rumours of £40m bids from Barcelona – which is hardly the most original of suggestions – but with his status as a folk hero growing with every further stunner of a goal, why would he want to leave Stamford Bridge?

Here’s a compilation of some of his best bits. You won’t find many displays of defensive poise amongst them, but Chelsea may have stumbled upon their most effective midfield magician.
