Who would want the Manchester United job?
With recent stories speculating that Sir Alex, who is set to retire at the end of the season, contacted Carlo Ancelotti to succeed him but declined and asked David Moyes instead, I wondered about Ancelotti’s intentions.
Firstly, this is my perspective on the situation and what i think the viewpoints of every manager involved are, but I am not the only one who has thought this and have heard friends and other people in the world of football say they would not accept the job after Ferguson’s retirement. Thinking about it, it is totally reasonable to find the prospect of succeeding arguably the best club manager in recent years hugely daunting and ultimately being deterred from taking the job. With a career span at United alone lasting 26 years, winning 38 major trophies, including 13 domestic league titles & 2 Champions League titles, David Moyes has a huge uphill challenge on his hand to replicate anywhere near the length and successfulness of SAF’s tenure.
So, what happens if Moyes doesn’t succeed at Manchester United? His current measuring stick is against the greatest manager in United’s history whereas the person who succeeds Moyes will only have the successor of Ferguson to match up against. Ancelotti is clearly an astute and clever manager and recognises that even United may be too much for him at the time being and he’s won European titles both as player and manager and numerous league titles so it’s not like he’s incompetent or inexperienced for the role, whereas Moyes, although a sound enough manager, never has managed at the top level of European football, so could be deemed a risk, but you can’t blame him for backing himself for the very top after a hugely successful stabilizing of Everton as a top 7 team in England. Maybe then leading to a Pep or Ancelotti managerial stint if Moyes cannot adapt to life in Manchester, let’s see shall we? I hope Moyes does prove a good appointment for the United faithful.
