Manchester United given hope as target declines new contract

Nampalys Mendy, an exciting prospect for the future has denied a contract extension with the newly promoted Ligue 1 team and Manchester United have been tracking the French U21 international.

Now I know at the moment it seems like Monaco are only signing players and it would seem a given that Monaco would tie down the players they wanted to keep from within the club by throwing enormous amounts at them. It seems like Mendy is wise beyond his years and wants to move on just in case on the off chance Claudio Ranieiri buys a player of already international stature to play the central midfield position the young Frenchman seemed to make his own last season.

With 31 games during last season he repaid Ranieri’s faith of playing him by being largely impressive, with a normal tag of “the next Claude Makelele” slapped on any combative defensive midfielder, but with Didier Christophe, the head scout of AS Monaco declaring Mendy is a literal “carbon copy” of Makelele who is revered as one of the best defensive midfielders of all time. I’ll admit, I’ve never seen him play, but heard good things about him so I don’t think it’s just a case of lazy journalism by slapping the prefix of “the next” on him. With Ranieri’s recent comments about Mendy saying how saddened he was about his decision to move on and not stay at Monaco, but would you want to be locked into a club which will not be patient in the development of players and more likely to spend money instead of nurture and possibly stunt your own career? With United seeming to be front runners for his signature, it looks like they could be getting a very good young player to play in midfield and solve their “crisis”, for FREE! Moyes, Moyes sign him up.
