One of the highlights of last year’s cup winning season for Swansea was the performances of on-loan Dutch midfielder Jonathan De Guzman. Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has made it one of his priorities to seal the signature of the midfielder on a permanent basis, the fee of £7 million may be a potential stumbling block though, however sometimes you have to pay for quality and De Guzman certainly gives the Welsh team that.
De Guzman was ever present in the side last year making 37 appearances throughout the season and scoring five goals, including a brace in the league cup final against Bradford. His performances last year in the Premiership have obviously impressed many as he has broke into the Dutch national team.
He was loaned to Swansea after his parent club Villareal were relegated to the second division in Spain and he has flourished in England however now that Villareal have bounced straight back up to La Liga he may choose return to fight for a place in Spain. It has been reported though that Spanish club would be willing to let him go for the right price.
An alternate option is that if Swansea can’t get any negotiation on the price they may choose to try and extend the players loan spell for another year before then trying again to sign him. Swansea fans will be hoping though that in whatever capacity the club can keep him for another season as they look to progress to the next level and compete on a European stage in the Europa League.
Some of the midfielders greatest attributes are his creativity, vision and passing, he is a gifted passer of the ball and that allowed him to be the player in the middle of the pitch Swansea needed to turn defence into attack in a matter of seconds which is what Swansea’s system requires.
He is a classy player and Swansea will know he can make a difference in their squad next season and fans of the club must be hoping that Huw Jenkins can find the money to secure the signature of De Guzman on a permanent basis.
