Spain will take part in the Confederations Cup hosted in Brazil over the next couple of weeks as winners of the European Championships from last year. One of the things a lot of people will be looking out for in this tournament will be how Fernando Torres plays for Spain, he began to find some confidence towards the end of last season’s Premier League campaign and fans of the striker will be hoping that Torres can really find himself again in this tournament.
This is Spain’s second consecutive outing in the tournament after playing in South Africa in 2009, that time they opened up their campaign with an emphatic 5-0 win over New Zealand with a stunning hat trick from Torres.
Although it wasn’t against a team with any real pedigree with no disrespect to New Zealand, the goals he scored were simply breath taking and that game was ‘El Nino’ at his best.
With Jose Mourinho returning to Chelsea he will be hoping that Torres can prove to him and his doubters that he can still play at the top of his game and this tournament is the perfect opportunity for the Spaniard to do so.
If he can find some of his best form and get his name on the score sheet regularly throughout the tournament that will give him great confidence to take into the new season. That is exactly what Chelsea fans will be hoping for as Torres has lost a lot of confidence during his time at Stamford Bridge and that has affected him badly.
The more games he plays well in though the more confidence will come and especially if he can fire Spain to the Confederations cup title many will feel that the old Fernando Torres is back. It is important for him as a player to perform in this tournament and prove that mentally he is strong and that he is still one of the most fearsome strikers in Europe.
Here is Torres’s fantastic hat-trick last time out in the Confederations Cup.
