Gary Lineker’s post football career has been so successful that it is sometimes easy to forget that he once was the most prolific striker on the planet.
Who doesn’t like Gary? He’s a national treasure. He presents Match of the Day, does those funny Walkers adverts that we all have a chuckle at and he’s got a fit wife. Top bloke all round, I say.
He didn’t receive a yellow card during his whole career which just affirms his status as one of the nicest guys in football.
The only blemish on a glittering career is his spell at Tottenham Hotspur and it is obvious that he is still a fan of club, but nobody’s perfect, right?
At international level, too, he was sublime, notching up 48 goals for England which leaves him second on the top England goalscorers list.
What I admire most about Lineker’s career was the fact he was very consistent and achieved success in Spain, too, scoring 42 goals for Barcelona during a three spell in Spain, including an El Clasico hat-trick.
I suppose Lineker’s playing career belongs to a different generation as we are more accustomed to seeing him on a T.V screen as opposed to on the football pitch.
So, depending on your age, here is a video to educate or refresh you on Gary’s time as a footballer as we take a look back at all 48 of his England goals. A fine collection of strikes that demonstrates exactly why Lineker had such an impressive career at the top; always in the right place and a nose for goal.
