The new breed of the Italian national team
Italy have been criticised for being a boring and slow paced team, both the national and domestic clubs alike, but this could be the dawn of a new era with the current players starting to establish themselves in the squad.
With the Confederations Cup being won by Brazil in an emphatic win over Spain, Italy were knocked out by the runners up in the semis and largely played well enough to win and due to a slack spot kick they inevitably lost after Jesus Navas scored the final penalty kick of the game. Things do look promising for Italian national team, though, with second place in the European Championship and third in the Confeds, the World Cup could well be the platform they need to cross over the line they have been flirting with as of late.
Now, Italy are a fantastically technical team with their three at the back and have the ability and players to retain the ball like Spain but twinned with ruthlessness and penetration in their strikers. They also have the explosiveness of players such as El Shaarawy who has the ability to be one of the best in the world and Giacherrini is emerging as a big player in the Italy set up and is so versatile, with him being able to play both wings, central attacking midfield and is quite a nifty wing back in the 3-5-2 Italy deploy.
With Marco Verratti the heir to Andrea Pirlo’s throne as the deep-lying playmaker and Angelo Ogbonna of Torino F.C becoming more renowned and attracting the eye of Juventus, I think he may have signed already? I think Italy will be a major player in the next World Cup and they’re usually seen as a dark horse aren’t they? I think it will be a Semi final finish, maybe a final appearance. Forza Italia.
