A Look At The Mediocrity In The Manchester United Midfield On Transfer Deadline Day

Watching the Liverpool vs Manchester United game on Sunday, it struck me that the Manchester club’s midfield is woefully average for the best team in England.

I know for a fact that every person in and around football worth their salt know that United’s midfield has been in need of a rebuild for a while now, as made clear when Ferguson called upon his favourite son.

Paul Scholes previously had to come out of retirement and even spent his pension on a new pair of boots from a high street shop before kick-off. There have been numerous linking’s of Wesley Sneijder over recent years when at Inter. Then started Luca Modric saga that was continuous, but it never really materialised and he left for Real Madrid and became the worst signing in La Liga history – harsh, in my opinion.

Is a creative midfielder, who plays in the hole what they need, though? They still have Shinji Kagawa, who to every other team would be the first name on the team sheet, but at United under Ferguson he was rarely picked and when he was he was deployed on the left wing.

Jurgen Klopp, Borussia Dortmund manager, said recently that it “breaks his heart” to see one of the most promising attacking players played out of position like that. But don’t worry, he didn’t even make the squad to face Liverpool yesterday!

I think Tom Cleverley is the player that’s supposed to become their most attacking outlet in midfield, but I can’t see him becoming that good of a player. He is decent enough, but United quality? I don’t think so, but I’m willing for him to prove me wrong for the sake of the England set-up.

It seems as we speak there is a lacklustre attempt to sign Marouane Fellaini from Everton, who seems to make more sense to me, but I always thought when Manchester United wanted a player, they got them almost instantaneously?

So I can’t see why it’s turned into a damp squib attempt to get their man. I’m presuming it’s a refusal to stump up the cash as opposed to the player not fancying a move to one  of the biggest clubs in world football.
