What has happened to the mentality at Manchester United?

It seems Manchester United have suddenly become mortal again, but how effective is the new way they’re perceived and how long will it last?

Firstly, under Ferguson’s reign at United, I never ever thought a team could take points from them, home or away. I’d always back them to get a result whether it be a Champions League match against Madrid or a weakened fielded team against a lower league team in a domestic cup. Obviously I’d have some thoughts regarding other team and their level of threat, but then I’d level it with “but they’re Manchester United.”

I think it’s clear to everyone who watches football that the aura surrounding United was half of their presence – not only did they know they’d beat you, but in the back of your mind you’d know you will struggle to get a result against them. Unfortunately from a United perspective, they’ve lost their bite this year and teams are really, really giving it a go against United and it’s paying dividends to whoever has that mentality. I know for a fact, as an Arsenal fan, we’ll be one of the few clubs who still think they’re what they used to be and will just sit off and let them impose themselves on the game freely.

Southampton showed earlier in the season they’re vulnerable to a sucker punch and it looked on the cards for Stoke to get something against them on Saturday, but Manchester United had the rub of the green and an in-form Rooney proved a catalyst again. I think Moyes needs to quickly install a Fergie attitude at the club or face the harsh reality of just being a “decent Premier League club” instead of the world beaters status they’ve earned under Ferguson’s tenure.
