Analysing Chelsea’s Start To The Season: The Highs And Lows Under Jose Mourinho

Chelsea are currently enjoying a decent season under the guidance of Jose Mourinho. They sit third in the league, just four points behind leaders Arsenal, and sit top of Group E in the Champions League by three points. The Blues’ most recently outing ended with a 3-0 trouncing of local rivals West Ham, so I thought that I would analyse their good start to the season.

Highlights:

They have to far beaten Fulham and West Ham, but the highlight of the London results has to be their 2-0 victory away at Arsenal in the League Cup.

Their European form has also been pleasing.

Low points:

Their 2-0 loss at Newcastle hurt Mourinho and he didn’t hide that. After a sluggish display both individually and as a team up at St James’ Park they returned south with their tails between their legs.

Standout players:

Oscar is having another fine season, but for me it’s John Terry. The skipper has come back into the set up and played every minute of the club’s Premier League season, winning  48/70 of his headed duels and completed 91% of his passes.

Flops:

David Luiz, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba have all failed to inspire this season and could see their places at risk in the January transfer window.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Kevin de Bruyne have also failed to make any real impact, but that is more because of lack of game time rather than performances.

Prediction:

I think it will be between Chelsea and Arsenal for the title, myself. Mourinho has got them firing and tightened them up at the back, while he also has a wealth of talent to choose from.
