Despite Manchester United already splashing the cash on Juan Mata this month in what was their record transfer deal, Sky Bet have priced the Red Devils as favourites to sign both Koke, who is currently on the books of Atletico Madrid, and Ander Herrera who plies his trade for Athletic Bilbao. But do the Old Trafford outfit need the midfield pair?
Let’s take a look at United’s current options.
In the holding role, David Moyes has Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher to choose from, as well as summer signing Marouane Fellaini who signed in the summer from his former club Everton. The trio are enough to keep the Reds ticking in my eyes, especially as Moyes has opted for a four man midfield this season so far, with two of those being wingers.
Both Ander and Koke and box to box players, with the latter a little bit more offensive than the former, so it would be with the likes of Juan Mata, Shinji Kagawa and err, Tom Cleverley that they had to contend with.
Moyes could always reshuffle the shape of his side to accommodate them, with perhaps Carrick and Fellaini holding, Mata right, Januzaj left and Koke just ahead, or maybe Ander in the deeper role with Carrick. But then that leaves Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez to fight it out for the lone striker role.
For me, United don’t need the La Liga pair, though they would certainly add a heap of quality onto the side.
United fans, what do you think?
