Liverpool look likely to lift their first Premier League trophy this season after beating Manchester City 3-2. They now sit top of the table on 77 points, two points ahead of Chelsea, and are the division’s top scorers.
Their midfield has been a huge part of their success this season, with Steven Gerrard at the heart of that, but according to the Daily Star the Reds could be mixing that up next summer.
The reports suggest that Brendan Rodgers will go for Everton’s Ross Barkley in a £38million deal. Here are three reasons why it would be the perfect move for all involved.
1) Champions League
The Reds are almost guaranteed Champions League football next season which is something that Barkley hasn’t experienced. The young midfielder will be boosted by playing against the top players around Europe, and although Everton look close to stealing fourth place from Arsenal, they would surely be making up the numbers in the competition.
2) Gerrard replacement
Barkley is a similar type of player to Gerrard and in my eyes is his natural replacement. He is an energetic midfielder who loves to get forward, but the aggression he plays with allows him to chip in defensively.
Barkley has scored five goals and averages a tackle a game this season.
3) The Rodgers mould
Rodgers has built a team of young players who are predominantly English.
The Reds currently have Jon Flanagan, Glen Johnson, Andre Wisdom, Martin Kelly, Jordon Ibe, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge representing the country.
