During contract talks between Messi’s representatives and members of the Barcelona board, away from the financial break-down, there were two suggestions put forward from the Messi camp.
Spanish paper Marca reports that the contract will see the Argentinian forward receive €20 million after tax, plus an extra €3 million in add-ons if objectives are met.
But it is also reported that Messi wanted to offer his opinion on footballing matters, including offering long-time friend and goalkeeper Jose Pinto a new deal and bringing in Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.
The two are international teammates and close friends, with Messi being the godfather to Aguero’s son but just how would he fit into the Barcelona team.
Well, the winds of change are currently blowing in Catalonia. Tata Martino is going to be departing and in his place will step a former Barcelona player in the shape of Celta Vigo boss Luis Enrique.
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has described Enrique as a blend of Guardiola and Mourinho, with the great tactical ability and the brutal honesty to cut players not needed.
Aguero and Messi have a great partnership at international level, but what would his arrival mean for the false nine position that Messi loves so much.
Would he be willing to move back to the wing for his old friend? Or perhaps occupy an advanced (false) number 10 role in behind Aguero as a traditional number 9.
Difficult to say what way Enrique will look to evolve this Barcelona team, but Manchester City should keep a close eye on their superstar striker this summer.
