When Arsenal splashed the cash to land Mesut Ozil last summer it sparked a sense of belief around the Emirates. After going eight years without a trophy the supporters started to dream about landing some silverware, especially when they topped the Premier League table going into the new year. They fell short, though, finishing fourth, but did win the FA Cup to end their barren spell.
The Germany international has since won the Premier League’s signing of the season, though the Metro have confirmed that Arsenal fans hijacked the vote to ensure their man took gold.
For me, he has an argument – whether it was done for a laugh or not. Ozil played 26 league games this season and scored five goals and claimed nine assists. His creativity led to the Gunners ripping teams apart for large parts of the season before he burnt himself out.
He also played eight Champions League games and made 19 key passes in that time, which combined with his 76 in the Premier League shows just how much of an asset he is to the north London side.
Whether the vote was rigged or not, I believe it came to the correct conclusion.
