When Jose Enrique was confirmed to miss out for the season due to injury, and then loan signing Aly Cissokho was sidelined after some poor displays, Liverpool were forced to deploy Jon Flanagan from left-back and hope that he could stand strong against the best. He did, despite being a right-back, but Brendan Rodgers will be looking for a permanent solution to their defensive problem.
Sky Bet have placed the Reds favourites to sign Ashley Cole, whose Chelsea contract runs out this summer, and I think it is the perfect fit for all parties.
Cole would get to stay in the Premier League, the Champions League and is almost guaranteed to be first choice for the entire campaign. He’s also English, which fits in nicely with Rodgers’ mantra, and has the experience to help the younger players around him.
Liverpool would be getting one of the most decorated full-backs in English football who has played at the highest level for almost his entire career.
I think Chelsea made a mistake letting him leave but another man’s trash is another man’s treasure, as they say.
