Liverpool Agree €22m Deal For Defender, But What Should Rodgers Do With Flanagan?

With Jose Enrique missing almost the entire campaign last season for Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers brought in Aly Cissokho from Valencia, but that didn’t go to plan. The lanky left-back struggling to adapt to the pace of the Premier League for a lot of the season, which left Jon Flanagan – a right-back – to fill in. Rodgers has supposedly struck a deal for Seville defender Alberto Moreno, who has agreed a five year deal.

It is undoubtedly a good signing – he played 43 games for the La Liga outfit last season and has three caps for the Spanish national side. But where does it leave Flanagan?

For me, there is a natural solution. With the €22 million being spent on Moreno, you’d expect him to go straight in at left-back. If he needs time to get used to the pace of the league then so be it, Flanagan could fill in. But I would stick him at right-back over Glen Johnson.

The England international had a poor season last time and it seems his legs have burned out, so to put Flanagan in his natural slot makes sense to me.

The 21-year-old dubbed the ‘Scouse  Cafu’ played 23 league games last season and 79 tackles and 75 clearances.
