With the World Cup kicking off this week, here are five Arsenal players that I think you should keep an eye on in Brazil this summer.
1) Per Mertesacker – Germany
The German giant will need to be on point if he is to lead his country to the later stages of the competition, but I believe he will. He was a monster for the Gunners last season, making 251 clearances and winning 89/135 headers.
2) Olivier Giroud – France
The burly forward scored 16 league goals in 36 games last season and could be the focal point to the France national side this summer. After smashing Jamaica 8-0 last night I think they are in for a strong tournament but if they are to win their group Giroud needs to be firing.
3) Mesut Ozil – Germany
If I were Ozil, I’d want to have a long rest before next season after burning himself out last time. He will be seen as the creative hub in the Germany side, though, with Marco Reus out of the competition, as Ozil made 76 league chances.
4) Laurent Koscielny – France
Along with Mertesacker, Koscielny bossed at the back for Arsenal and I think could be one of the most important players in the France squad. Arguably the Gunners’ most reliable player last term, he averaged 11 defensive actions per game and completed 93% of his passes.
5) Jack Wilshere – England
Speaking as an England fan, I hope he has the tournament of his life. Although he may not play every minute of every game, I think he will be a major part of how Roy Hodgson sets his side up. Wilshere completed 86% of his passes last season.
