One of the perks of obtaining a manager who is currently managing in the World Cup is that they have a good relationship with their players and are in constant interaction with other stars. This can help when trying to purchase some of the talents who are participating in the competition. With so many success stories at this year’s edition in Brazil, Louis van Gaal has a pool of talent to dip his toes into.
However, could van Gaal be restricting himself somewhat? With the vast amount of players on show at this prestigious event, the new Manchester United boss appears to only be linked with those from his Netherlands squad. The Red Devils have been linked with Daryl Janmaat, Bruno Martins Indi, Stefan de Vrij, Arjen Robben and Daley Blind since the start of the World Cup, so it is quite possible that the Dutchman is aiming to add a couple of fresh faces from this Netherlands team. New reports today from SabotageTimes suggest that Dirk Kuyt is also on the list of players that van Gaal wants to sign from his World Cup squad.
While the Dutch squad is full of exciting talent that is just waiting to burst on to the Premier League scene, it could be argued that Manchester United are not looking in the right places if they are being linked with players like Dirk Kuyt. Although he is a good player and very much a team player, he is not what he used to be and I fail to see what he would add to the United squad.
Kuyt is surpringly versatile as he has played striker and full-back this summer, but beyond that he does not offer much except Premier League experience. If van Gaal wants a cheap and reasonably experienced forward then there are so many more to choose from at the World Cup. Christian Bolanos of Costa Rica has been impressive and that is only one of the options United’s new manager could explore.
