As Ashley Cole departs and Chelsea’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid’ Filipe Luis heats up, there remains one left-back at Stamford Bridge who must be feeling pretty unloved. Having spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, Ryan Bertrand recently returned to his parent club with a much better chance of getting a game. It seems, however, that he is not the man Jose Mourinho wants.
To be fair to the 24-year-old, even Chelsea stalwart Cole struggle for playing time last season, as the Blues’ Portuguese manager preferred to use right-back Cesar Azpilicueta in a left-sided role. With no sign of Bertrand’s situation changing at Stamford Bridge, the Independent have linked the player with a move to Liverpool.
The defender is at an age where he needs to be playing regularly and, having had to endure six loan spells with six different clubs, it is unlikely he would be willing to accept another temporary move. Rumoured to be available for around £8 million, Brendan Rodgers could snap him up to the fill the Reds’ problem left-back position.
Twice capped by England, Bertrand clearly has something about him. Whether or not Jose Mourinho appreciates that is another matter, and a switch to Anfield could well be on the cards.
