With the last of the two semi-finals played yesterday, there are just two games remaining in what has been a brilliant World Cup for the spectators and players themselves. Fans have enjoyed goal-fests and upsets at every turn, as well as exhilarating games. The players have been given a fantastic opportunity to showcase what they’ve got and they haven’t disappointed.
Many of the Dutch team have been very impressive, especially the younger stars. Obviously Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder have all been very good, but you would expect them to be. Many of Louis van Gaal’s younger prospects have really benefited from his faith in using them. Stefan de Vrij, Daryl Janmaat, Daley Blind and Memphis Depay have all shone on more than one occasion.
It is no surprise that Manchester United have been linked with most of the Dutch squad, but the latest to be linked with a move to Manchester is Sneijder. The Sun have linked the Red Devils with a move for the Dutchman, but Galatasaray are insisting that £16 million will have to coughed up in order to sign him. This is a fee which may put off the new United boss.
In my opinion, United should not sign Sneijder. I think there are much cheaper options out there who can do a better job than him. If United are after an attacking midfielder, then they have the money to pay a big fee for someone much younger and sharper.
Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj are both competing for that position at the moment, and Sneijder would find himself doing the same. All three players are simply too good to spend most of the time on the bench. The type of player United need is someone who can really impress the fans, and Sneijder may not be able to do that at this stage of his career.
Someone like James Rodriguez could give United the wow factor they are after, as the Colombian star is younger and seems to be a lot more creative than the Dutchman.
