Having suffered a premature end to his World Cup campaign due to him elbowing Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic, Alex Song is now being linked with a move away from Barcelona. According to the Daily Star, there is interest to bring the Cameroon international back to the Premier League.
Formerly of Arsenal, Song made the switch to the Nou Camp in 2012, earning the Gunners £15 million. Since then, the midfielder has struggled to full establish himself at the Spanish club and has often found himself left out of the starting lineup. This has reportedly caused the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United to question Barcelona’s £20 million valuation of the player.
Song, though, does still have three years left on his contract. Despite having trouble getting into Barcelona’s side, this means that his current employers are able to demand a substantial fee from anyone looking to sign him.
With Chelsea having already signed his former team-mate Cesc Fabregas and United getting Ander Herrera, both for fees of around £30 million, it seems unlikely that either club would be willing to pay such a large sum for Song. What’s more, they have both recently been linked with options that offer better value for money.
It will be interesting to see if anything develops regarding Song. Ultimately, though, the 26-year-old will just hope to find himself somewhere he can play regularly.
