Italian Striker Linked With Anfield Exit – Why Borini Could Seal Permanent Sunderland Switch

With better forwards blocking his way into Liverpool’s starting lineup, Fabio Borini was given the opportunity for regular gametime at Sunderland last season.  The Italian striker spent the entire campaign on loan at the Black Cats, featuring 40 times in all competitions and scoring 10 goals.  According to Sky Sports, he may have done enough to earn himself a permanent move to the Stadium of Light.

Although a ratio of one in four may not seem that impressive for someone whose job is to put the ball in the back of the net, it is important to remember that Sunderland were fighting relegation for much of the season, with the side at one point looking doomed to a future in the Championship.  Borini’s goals played a big part in getting them out of trouble and, deceptively youthful, he was awarded the club’s Young Player of the Year award in April.

Despite the departure of Luis Suarez, Liverpool still have Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert to play up front, with both higher in the pecking order than Borini.  Talk of Loic Remy possibly joining the Reds this summer and a deal for Divock Origi that would see him link up with the club next year only emphasise the fact that there may not be a future for him at Anfield.

At 23 years of age, Borini needs to be playing regularly.  He could now get his chance to continue doing so at Sunderland, although the reported £14 million fee may seem excessive to many supporters.  If the transfer goes through, it will be up to the Italian to justify his new employers’ decision and prove his doubters wrong.
