The youngster had earlier joined the Reds Portuguese side Sporting for a £8m deal in 2013 in the transfer deadline day when the Reds also snapped up French defender Mamadou Sakho. Ilori however hasn’t yet been able to muster up a starting eleven spot for the Merseyside Giants. It now appears that he will have to wait fir yet another season before he can make his bow before the eager set of home supporters.
Ilori is a highly rated centre back possessing immense versatility and suave tactical intelligence. His spell in Granada was highly promising which showed that he could play in the highest echelons of club football. But Liverpool’s plethora of defensive cover in the back line meant Ilori wouldn’t be able to feature in the 2014-15 season. With Daniel Agger now being fourth choice centre back behind Lovren, Sakho and Skrtel and with Kolo Toure also in the mix, Ilori had a significant ladder to climb for a starting eleven spot.
Ilori seemed delighted with his move and was quoted saying, “I am here to help the team. Personally speaking, I have contract with Liverpool and I hope to be able to return there next season. Before that, I want to help the Girondins and I will do everything I can for this team. I will give my best. I saw the game at the Stade Chaban-Delmas. It was very impressive. The team had a huge victory.”
