Usually when any transfer negotiations fails to go through, teams move on to other targets in the market without wasting their precious time but AS Monaco seems to be doing the exact opposite. In 2013, AS Monaco was linked with Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney but the move never happened. Probably, United weren’t ready to sell one of their main commercial face of their club that time.
Surprisingly, Monaco are still desperate to lure the English star away from Old Trafford. Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev is confident that one day, Rooney will be playing in AS Monaco colours.
He said in a recent interview,
“One year ago, we were discussing one of the top players of the Premier League, a top English player (Rooney),”
“But it was on the table. This opportunity finally did not happen, but I think one day that it will come, that it will happen.”
After spending huge in previous windows, AS Monaco cut down their spending by a big margin after loaning out Radamel Falcao and selling James Rodriguez for a reported £63m transfer fee to Real Madrid. Now, the latest reports suggests that AS Monaco’s owner Dmitry Rybolovlev is planning to spend big again to make them a force to reckon with in Europe. So, if Monaco comes with a sensational bid for Wayne Rooney in January, should United sell him?
Wayne Rooney is currently on a £300,000-a-week contract with the Red Devils. After spending huge in the Summer window, may be this is the right time for the Manchester United management to consider selling their captain. It will not only reduce their wage bill considerably but also make more money available for buying much needed defenders in the Winter transfer window. Rooney leaving will not effect the squad’s depth by much as United already have RVP and Falcao as strikers. Mata and Di Maria can play in Rooney’s current no 10 position but they do need another backup striker at-least after Danny Welbeck’s and Chicharito’s departure in summer.
