David De Gea’s brilliant performances for Manchester United haven’t gone unnoticed as Real Madrid have cast their shadow on the 23-year old. Casillas’ recent performance for both Spain and Real Madrid have come under scrutiny, and with his age, it won’t be surprising if the Spaniard is sold in the next year or so. De Gea’s agent, Jorge Mendes, was a key figure in Ronaldo’s transfer to Real Madrid, is set to make the deal happen.
Casillas’ luck ran out with the Spanish national team as he was replaced by De Gea for the game against Luxembourg after an error-prone display against Slovakia. A move to Liverpool might soon be on the cards for Casillas as Victor Valdes turned down the chance of going to Merseyside on a trial. These chain of events could mean that Carlo Ancelotti will be out for a new goalkeeper as soon as the January window opens.
Real Madrid signed Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas in the summer after the departure of Diego Lopez to Milan, and despite that they are looking for a quality long term replacement for ‘Saint Iker’ who has served the club for almost a decade. De Gea is high on Ancelotti’s list as he too started impressively at a very young age like Casillas. He moved to Manchester United for €20m in the year 2011 after impressing at Atletico Madrid. After initial struggles, De Gea finally got accustomed to the physicality of the Premier League. A few seasons ago he was deemed ‘to0 weak’ at set pieces, but managed to silence most of his critics last season when he was a shining light in a poor United team.
A move back to Spain might tempt De Gea, especially if it’s Real Madrid who want to sign you. His contract with Manchester United runs till 2016, so he might not feel the urgency to sign a new deal anytime soon with Madrid knocking on the door.
