In order to address their defensive issues, Arsenal are set to swoop for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk. This is a reports which has been published in English Media Outlet Mirror. There have been widespread reports that Arsenal missed out on a number of targets in the summer but are already plotting moves in the upcoming January transfer window.
We had reported yesterday that the Gunners are preparing a sensational move for Borussia Dortmund but it now appears that a move for Van Dijk looks more feasible. In fact the Dutchman was one of the reported targets for the Gunners in the summer but as they missed out on the player, the North London club will try to acquire for his services again in the coming winter.
Arsenal tried for the defender but could not persuade Celtic to sell the 23-year-old. The Scottish champions however will struggle to keep him in January after failing to qualify for the Champions League’s group stage. Moreover Arsenal’s interest would also mean that it would be tough to decline an enticing offer to play in the Premier League.
Arsene Wenger, who recently claimed at the club’s Annual General Meeting that he would splash the cash to solve his defensive woes in January. Wenger said: “I believe we have done remarkably well on the transfer market. I agree we could have bought one more player, (but) we did not find one. We will try to rectify that, because we are a bit short, and overall I think we will rectify that in the transfer market in January.”
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis also stressed that the club will look to spend in the coming transfer window. Gazidis said: “I have to always keep a substantial amount of cash in reserve at all times in order to comply with our debt obligations.”
A move for Van Dijk looks more feasible than moving for Hummels. The German wouldn’t be available on the cheap, hence trying to acquire teh services of the Celtic defender make much more sense.
