Liverpool’s search for a goalkeeper could end with Kiko Casilla of RCD Espanyol after the goalkeeper revealed that he could be sold in the near future. Casilla told AS that his current club are in need of funds, which could be met by his departure. He said, “I’ve not had a call from anyone at Liverpool yet.
“Espanyol are like most Spanish clubs – they need money – and if my departure happens, it’s because Espanyol needs the money.
“When the bids happen, if it happens, we will value it and decide what happens,” he added.
Casilla has appeared in all (7) of Espanyol’s games so far and has managed to keep 3 clean sheets. According to reports, it is understood that the 28-year old will cost close to £8m since he is contracted with the club till June 2018.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will want to strengthen the goalkeeping area after the poor form of Simon Mignolet. The Belgian international’s second season has been patchy so far with his decision making being scrutinised in most of the games. Mignolet’s distribution isn’t the best either, an important characteristic that Rodgers needs for his style. The 27-year old is an excellent shot-stopper, but he still has a long way to go before he can convince that he is an all-round goalkeeper.
The addition of Casilla will add some much needed depth and competition in the goalkeeping position. Casilla was called up to the Spanish squad recently by manager Vicente Del Bosque after some impressive performances for his club. He was backup to Iker Casillas and David De Gea in their last two friendlies.
Casilla’s stats are better compared to Mignolet, so the Belgian will have to remain on his toes as there is every chance that the Spaniard could be the new number 1 between the sticks for Liverpool. Pepe Reina’s departure to Bayern Munich has left a hole in the squad, and based on Casilla’s performances so far, he could be the man to replace Reina at Liverpool.
