Manchester United face Liverpool battle to sign star forward

According to reports in Talksport, Manchester United are set to face some serious competition from arch rivals Liverpool to sign out of favour Bayern Munich star Xherdan Shaqiri. The Swiss star had an excellent World Cup, plays well and shows his ability when given the odd chance but is far from amassing a regular starting eleven spot under manager Pep Guardiola. Tottenham are also interested in Shaqiri and to add to the competition fellow German side Schalke 04 have also voiced an interest in the 23-year-old.

Liverpool were very much interested to sign Shaqiri in the summer and had even contacted his brother, who is also his agent. However reports died down ever since and Italian side Roma also discussed potential terms before Guardiola persuaded Shaqiri to stay at the Allianz Arena. However it now appears that he has grown restless and wants to quit the Bavarian giants fro more game time elsewhere.

Shaqiri recently said to German daily BILD: “In the winter we will get together again and see. But the club has the final say.”

It is well known that Shaqiri would fit in easily at Liverpool or United. He is capable of playing on wither wings and can also play in the middle. However, he is also versatile enough to play just off the lone striker. The Swiss International would easily walk into Brendan Rodgers’ side due to his flexibility and immense tactical awareness.

United too are interested and Louis Van Gaal rightly wants players who are hungry and can give their all on the pitch. An interesting battle follow or will Spurs have the last laugh?
